About Korean Food

Korean food5These photos are a few years old, taken when Daniel and I visited my home town, Seoul. He has already been to Korea six times, wow 6 already! We catch up with my family and friends and most importantly eat Korean foods. I don’t know how much of you know or are interested in Korean food. I don’t cook much Korean food at home myself, so thought it would be a good idea posting some real photos to show you how they look like (and make you hungry ๐Ÿ™‚ ).

The first photo is me with a cafe mascot called Ms. Lee. Same name, though there are thousands of Ms. Lees out there in Korea. Second photo (top right) is a seaweed soup with rice and side dishes, which I had for hotel breakfast. Third photo is barbequed duck with ssam (wrap in Korean). So how to eat? Take a variety of the greens, layered for flavour (choose from bitter, crunchy, sweet or spicy leaves), and spoon on some rice and ssamjang (a dressing made of fermented soybeans), then somehow fit in your mouth. You need to make sure not filling too much in the wrap ๐Ÿ™‚ Focusing on fermented soy, vegetables and grains with minimal meat is a big tick for the healthy Korean cuisine. It is also fun to make ssam at the table. I find it definitely makes Daniel eat slower. The last food is Daniel’s favorite street foods, Korean black pudding and veggie tempura.

Korean food1We went to this Korean restaurant in Insadong and had Deonjang braised pork ssam with spicy radish Kimchi and soybean soup, and a giant seafood-scallion pancake (even bigger than a plate, can you see?). Yum!
Korean food2These photos are taken from last year when we went to Busan for the weekend. From the top left, kelp noodle salad with pork, veggies and wasabi dressing, cold noodles, Korean style dumplings called Mandu, and raw beef tartar with raw egg york and nasi pear.

Korean food4Time for desserts? Koreans love frozen desserts such as shaved ice, ice creams, ice blended drinks and scoops of ice cream pressed between waffles in Summer (or all year around?). My favorite, Patbingsu, has sweetened tender red beans, fruits, cereals and syrup on shaved ice. Truly light and bright, the taste of summer! We also have a lot of green tea desserts, too.
Korean food3Lastly, some deadly drinks that Daniel and my cousins had. They drop a shot of whiskey or soju in a glass of beer to make this cocktail. I cannot imagine the taste >.< When you say “yes” to going out on Friday night or weekend, it means you are likely getting into these bad boys and maybe some silly karaoke session. Ah the last photo is a night view from Seoul Namsan tower, showing a small part of Seoul. Yes, it is a big busy city. Oh well..good memories.. I hope you enjoyed taking a look at the taste of Korea and feel free to ask me anything if you happen to go traveling there. I’m happy to help x

Switzerland

Sweiss is one of my favorite countries to visit in Europe. It is a small country though has so many different colours since it is surrounded by 6 different countries.
You can experience Germany, France and Italy all in one. It also doesn’t require too much traveling time from one city to the other unlike other countries in Europe, e.g. Greece or Spain.

J’aime boir the cafe noir! I find coffees in Switzerland never failed me even when I had this little black coffee on the river cruise. I didn’t expect much from it though a nice coffee with a petite chocolate for a couple of euros is not too bad at all.

We had a lunch at this fondue house which has got popular for Koreans since it was on reality TV show.
Food was average though I liked that kind of old style restaurant where waiters are friendly and is full of old furniture.
A bad habit I had while traveling was having a snack or sweets on the bus. I justify myself it is okay to try local snacks and reach towards a bag of chips.
I made a good choice though of course like yogurt and cheese (I have to admit they have pretty amazing dairy products!!).
That apple chips were so yummy, just dehydrated green apples pretty much. Munching on them pretty much everyday lol

You never get sick of looking outside while being on the bus. Greens after greens..mountains after mountains.. Il est beaucoup belle!I wish I learned more of German, French and Italian just for a basic conversation when buying, ordering and getting around.
I felt quite rude speaking English to them and not trying their language. They were still friendly enough though you can understand why a tourism is so big in Switzerland.

Beautiful Swiss Alps.. breathtaking scenery.. crisp unpolluted fresh air.. stillness.. quietness..

We only had a short walk about an hour in the mountains, but I made a promise to myself that I will definitely go back.I would love to try those hang gliding and hiking Alps. Well I will have to get over my fear of height first >.<
My mum also enjoyed Switzerland, first time for her and second for me. Living in a busy city in Korea, working long hours, looking after other people, etc.
She definitely deserves a good break and needs to get away from that life. I’m so fortunate I can go back home to see her and travel with her as well.
Nothing more valuable than that! You realise how important your family is when you live far far away from them. I’m looking forward to our next trip already:)

Budapest, Hungary

20130930_190422

When I arrived in Budapest, it was already late afternoon. We had a pub dinner near the Budapest parliament, which lightened up when it got dark.ย Such an amazing neo-gothic architecture that makes you feel so small in front. We took a river cruise to have a look at a beautiful night view of Budapest. Parliament building, chain bridge, castle hill, etc.

20130930_193850 20130930_200531

We also went to Heroes square which is located at the end of Andrassy Avenue. The monument was erected to commemorate the 1000 year old history of the Magyars.
After a couple of wines on the river cruise, I was so ready for bed since I was still jet-lagged (well..I don’t think I never got out of it until I left Europe…I’m so bad with time difference!)

I was not a big fan of local foods in Europe. From my experience, they seem to have quite heavy salty foods with lots of meats and potatoes.
Best meal of the day for me was a hotel breakfast unfortunately. Fresh fruits, vegetables and some protein! A couple of plates lasted me almost all day ๐Ÿ™‚

Fishermen’s Bastion.. Apparently there was a fish market nearby in medieval times, and this bastion was built to commemorate the fishermen who protected this part of the city.
There is a lookout at the top. The view from there in the morning was quite different to the night before. Then we took a walk through the Castle hill that has old citizen houses and narrow streets. The best aspect of the building that I was very fascinated by was the intricate design on theย balustrading. This design was on many monuments when we were exploring the place. This is also something that I was very fascinated by and was a design that I would apply for my home.

Beautiful Autumn colour trees covering up the hill. It was only late September though Autumn here seemed a bit early. My favorite season of the year!
You can find a lot of ittle souvenir shops had paprika (chillies) hung up to dry in the sun. Apparently a person who discovered vitamins in this chillies won the Novel prize.
After a only short walk we arrived in the Royal Palace, which was build in the 13th century after the Mongolian invasion. It’s used as the national gallery and history museum now.

Last meal in Budapest was pork, potatoes and rice (where is my greens?), then we headed to Wien, Austria.
It was a short stay in Hungary and definitely didn’t have enough time to get around the city and park area. I would love to go back there and stay a little longer next time to go to the parks, museums and local bistros and brasseries, too.
So many things to do in so little time in Europe:)

Best bagel I’ve ever had in my life! floppy bagel and thick cream cheese. Yum:pย  Argo tea was a good coffee replacement for me. I wish we had Argo in Australia:(

20130507_223615

I had to try this famous banana pudding from Magnolia cafe. Banana and custard..what could get wrong???

20130507_233648

Daniel’s snack..Grey’s papayas.

20130508_09330820130508_093605

There was this mini cupcake shop nearby our accommodation so we had to try it! It was all gone in ten seconds >.<

20130514_160000

We were just waking pass the flatiron building to get to “Eataly”, awesome Italian food market place. There was a food festival on.

stalls with a different kinds of food, wine stating, delicious chocolate, etc. I loved that atmosphere everyone is so cheerful and relaxed in the middle of the day.

We had a Korean Kimchi taco and red wine. There wasn’t much Kimchi in there though.

Ah this restaurant called “Prime and Beyond” is owned by Korean-American. I just purely searched a food ranking app on my phone to decide what to have for lunch.

Luckily it lived up to my expectation. We shared crab cakes for entree which had so much crab meat in side and flavoursome with Asian soy dressing.

I had a steak salad and Daniel a wet aged steak, which was so filling and juicy. Dessert..well we didn’t need after all that food though wanted to try their salted caramel cheese cake.

Two thumbs up for this place! We would love to go back there if we happen to go to NY again.

Lastly divine crape cake from Lady M, which was in the plaza hotel. I tried to make one myself at home though just not the same.

Looking through all photos..we ate so much! but seriously we just picked and chose to go these random places and turned out to be so impressive.

I love NYC ๐Ÿ™‚

Busan trip

Daniel and I went to Busan for two nights while we were in Korea last month for holiday.

I went down there with mum earlier this year, then thought it would be nice to show Daniel since he hadn’t been other cities much in Korea.

We checked in Lotte hotel which was in the middle of CBD and had an afternoon tea in the lounge.

Petite gateau avec the cafe noir:) very nice indeed. We could see high skype buildings and apartments from the hotel room and lounge.

Foodwise, there is so much to eat in Busan. We had double braised pork with salad and wasabi dressing for lunch (very hot >.<). Noodles and steamed dumplings for snack.

Delicious and very cheap as well. Busan has a large port and fish market, which makes it famous for sashimi dishes if you are keen raw fish.

We visited a fish market and everyone was trying to sell their fish and get us a table. We randomly chose this one young lady, who gave us a variety of fish and also a little octopus on the house.

You cannot get sashimi any fresher than that, and being in the city other than Seoul, people are so friendly and generous:)

There was a firework festival just a weekend before we arrived, and some other fairs on throughout the year.

We unfortunately missed all events since we were there during the week. But, it would have been nice to have a chance to go around other suburbs and go to the festivals cause it is quite a big city.
